This policy explains what information the Lokal mobile app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. Lokal is published by Lokal Technologies LLC, 30 N Gould St Ste R, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA ("Lokal", "we", "us"). Lokal connects street vendors and customers in Haiti so people can find nearby vendors in real time.
Information we collect
- Location. With your permission, we use your device's location to show vendors near you; it is used on your device and not stored on our servers. Vendors choose how their stall appears on the map: a general zone only, their precise position while open, or their precise position at all times. We only store the position a vendor has chosen to show. You can turn location off in your device settings; some features won't work without it.
- Phone number. If you sign in by phone, we send an SMS code to verify your number. Your number secures your account and, for vendors, lets you claim your business.
- Google account. If you choose "Continue with Google", we receive your name and email address from Google to create or access your account.
- Profile information. A display name you choose, an optional profile photo, and (for vendors) your business name, categories, products, product photos, opening status, and public contact links such as WhatsApp or social media that you choose to add.
- Messages. Text and voice messages you send to vendors or customers through the in-app chat.
- Voice input. If you use voice search or the AI assistant, the audio you record is sent for transcription so we can understand your request.
- Notifications. A device push token so we can notify you of new messages.
- Usage data. In-app events linked to your account (for example, searches performed and vendors viewed) that help us rank results, personalize the app, and improve it, and crash reports that help us fix problems.
How we use your information
- Show you vendors near you and, for vendors, show your stall to nearby customers.
- Verify your identity and keep your account secure across devices.
- Enable chat between customers and vendors, including voice notes.
- Understand voice and text requests through our AI assistant and voice search.
- Send you notifications about your conversations.
- Diagnose crashes and improve reliability and features.
What is public
Lokal is a discovery product. A vendor's business name, categories, products, photos, ratings, and map position are visible to other users in the app. The map position shown is the one the vendor chose in their privacy setting — a general zone by default; a precise position only if the vendor selected that option. Ratings you leave, including the display name you chose, are public on the vendor's profile. Customer preferences and your private chats are not public.
Sharing and service providers
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers that run Lokal, acting on our behalf:
- Google Firebase — authentication, database, storage, notifications, and crash reporting.
- Anthropic (Claude) — interprets your Kreyòl requests to the AI assistant.
- OpenAI (Whisper) — transcribes voice input into text.
- Open Food Facts and UPCitemdb — when a vendor scans a product barcode, only the barcode number is sent to look up the product's name and image. No personal information is included.
These providers process your data only to deliver these features. We may also disclose information if required by law.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from within the app: open My account and tap Delete my account. This permanently removes your profile, any vendor listing and product photos, your saved preferences, and your push token, and deletes your sign-in identity. Some information is not removed by account deletion: messages you have exchanged may remain visible to the other person in the conversation as part of their own history, ratings you have posted remain on the vendor's profile, and usage events already recorded are retained for product improvement. To ask for any of these to be removed as well, email us at the address below.
Children
Lokal is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Security
We use industry-standard measures, including Google Firebase's security infrastructure, to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to keep your data safe.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will revise the "Last updated" date above when we do.
